View Full Version : To wave or not to wave.... That is the question

So on my nice cruise back from the lake today there were a ton of different kinds of cars out today. I remember the day when motorcycles, especially cruisers, used to wave at each other, even during Bike Week. Wranglers used to wave at each other all the time (I haven't noticed them doing this recently so I'm not sure if they still do) and when my wife got her first Mini they would all wave at each other, now never.
I myself try to wave at other classic cars, Mustangs, and Hot Rods. Some wave, some don't. Today was a big wave day. It seemed like people were just out having a great cruise and were in a good mood.
So my question is: Do you wave at other mustangs? And for the people with Classic cars: Who else do you wave at?
If you don't wave, lets get back to being friendly and at least wave to other Mustangs. I think that this year being the 50th anniversary, the car deserves to be recognized. Even if you don't get a wave back right away, if we all just wave maybe we will start something.
Just something I was pondering on the back roads coming home today. Thought I'd share and start a discussion.

Like Dennis said - that's the way I do it. And if It's a nice classic (anything) I usually give a thumbs up.

Really? Those are typically the guys that won't even look at a wave unless the Vette is earlier than '70s.
But the big question is, do people wave back?

If i'm in my 67 and see another nice classic "whatever", I wave. Do it in time so they came return wave IF they're gonna.

Some do, some don't. No surprise there. I'd say it's about half and half.

I can almost always tell who will wave or wave back.
2005 or newer -- if it's bone stock they won't. Probably don't even recognize any other generations as being "mustangs" If it's modded, about 50/50. GT500s will usually wave.
1994-2004 -- if it's a GT or better it's probably about 60/40 that they will wave. Again, if it's modded the percentage goes up.
Foxes and older -- nearly always wave.
That said -- I'll wave to modded Mustangs, and to anything '04 or older (unless it's an obvious "secretary special"). I don't usually bother with stock 2005s and up -- most are in their own worlds.

I don't wave unless I'm waved to by the other driver.
If they wave, I will ALWAYS return the wave or give a thumbs up.

Dennis needs to get more and do other car shows besides Candia.
I know he doesn't have that company car anymore but still couldn't resist the thought.
Me I hope to be done with detail work on my car and roll out this weekend if powder coating parts come.

SVT10th pegged it.
If I see a nice Mustang I'll wave. I see lots of Mustangs on the road but very rarely one that is older than mine ('90 stock looking Kenne Bell blown LX 5.0). People driving any Mustang newer than a Fox don't seem to notice Foxes. Lots of heads turn and I get thumbs up from people driving all kinds of cars. I even overheard a woman at the Sunapee show that I was at a year or two ago look at my car and say to her husband, "thats a Mustang?"

So, what other cars have you owned that had a customary wave between owners?
For me:
Mustangs
Nissan Juke
Ford Bronco

Bronco? Really?
And the Juke I saw you wave, but I've asked other Juke owners if they wave and they just look at me like I have two heads.
I still think that the waving at certain cars is going down. Jibber said it: "I only wave if I get waved at" And if everyone has that stance (doesn't sound like that's everyone here) than the wave will die off.
So Jibber...... WAVE and be nice to others :D

Bronco? Really?
BRONCO! 1988 full-size with 351V8, 1" lift and 31" tires. I loved that thing. Drove it to 180K miles. We had it when Amy was pregnant (she commuted with it) -- was funny watching her climb into it at 8-9 months along. I miss that truck. (Though I don't miss the 30-odd gallon tank with todays prices)
Looked a bit like this one.
