A sweet Ford Mustang will be pulling into the party June 6 for the Carlisle Ford Nationals Weekend.

The three-layer yellow cake covered in vanilla buttercream frosting and topped in fondant is being made by The Carlisle Bakery to resemble a 1964 red Ford Mustang convertible.

The cake will be presented during the Mustang's 50th birthday party on the Carlisle Fairgrounds at 5 p.m. Friday. Carlisle Events is hosting Ford Nationals this weekend, June 6-8.

"Every birthday party has a guest of honor and a cake. We have all of this for the Ford Mustang party," said Michael Garland, spokesman with Carlisle Events. He called the car "the icing on the cake" for a party that will be held on the car show grounds with food, drink and music.

Bakery owner Eric Bell, who recently took over the business, said cake construction started Monday, June 2 and will continue right up to the last-minute on Friday with the addition of tires and a steering wheel as well as paint (aka food coloring) touch ups.

The cake will feed between 85 and 150 guests, depending on how it is cut, he said. Bell said this is his first car cake, however he and the bakery team have created other fun cakes including a saxophone, a pug and a bottle of Captain Morgan.

The biggest challenge with the Mustang? The windshield.

"I still haven't fully grasped how I'm going to make the windshield," Bell said, adding it will be made of some form of sugar.

He said everyone in the kitchen at the bakery has played a role in the cake from the design to the details. Four tires have been created out of gray and black fondant.

The hardest part just might be delivering the cake to the car show grounds.

"The first plan is to get it out the door in one piece," Bell said. "Then, try and maneuver it through Carlisle. As long as it's put together properly, it should stay together."
