IU just ran across this and thought it sounded cool.

The 2013 GREAT NEW ENGLAND WINGS & WHEELS

http://www.greatnewenglandwingsandwheels.com/uploads/images/wingsbanner2.jpg
The Galaxy Community Council, organizer of the Great New England Air Show, is proud to present the first edition of the Great New England Wings and Wheels, August 24th and 25th, 2013, at the Westover Metropolitan Airport, 255 Padgette Street in Chicopee, MA.
The two day family-friendly event will feature static vintage and modern aircraft, as well as CARS, CARS, CARS. Music groups, along with food and beverage vendors will keep everyone entertained and nourished. The cost to attend is $10 per person. Children under 12 are free.
Aviation enthusiasts will see civilian aircraft and War Birds, including a C-47 transport, General Hap Arnold’s B-25 Bomber and other World War II aircraft. It is possible, but not confirmed, that other static aircraft may include a few currently operational military aircraft.
For automobile enthusiasts, early 1900’s antiques to modern exotics and everything in between will be on display. The cost for vehicle entries is only $20.00 per day and includes your parking spot, admission for driver and rider, and a goodie bag for the first 500 registrants. An early registration discount of $5.00 will be available at our web site.

There's even a "Have your Mustang photographed with a Mustang" event.

The bad news -- it's two hours away in Chicopee, Mass. But if enough people are interested, it would probably be a blast.

I would be interested in this for one of the two days.
Even though I don't want to do the "car show thing" this year, this one sounds different enough and may be worth the effort.

Me, too. It's the same weekend as the ECCC show at Alvirne in Hudson, which I hope to finally make it to this year. Somehow I've never made that one even though it's in my town. But that's Sunday, I believe, and doing this on Saturday would be cool!

So looking at this, it looks like it's about a 2hr drive. There are a couple of ways to get there. I'm kind of looking at heading down Rt 2 to 202 to 33. I think that it would would a little nicer drive than the Pike.
I've talked to a couple people and it looks like Saturday would be the day to head down. If we do Rt 2, there is a rest area at Rt3 and 113 in Tyngsboro, or we can do the rest area on 495 (or both if need be).
It starts at 9am, so plan on leaving around 7am?
Whose in?

I think it's going to be much more than 2 hours if we take that route. Google adds 30 minutes for that route as opposed to the Rt 495 & I-90 route. But I don't know the area so I can't tell if it's a reasonable estimate....
Meeting up at 7am is fine, but I think we should plan the highway to "make time" -- and maybe do the scenic cruise on the way home.....

I just got my confirmation email and it contained the following information:

To ensure everyone has a good and safe time, we have identified the following rules of operation:

Due to the proximity of our neighbor, Westover Air Reserve Base, should you decide to have your vehicle pictured with one of the planes, your vehicle may be subjected to a security inspection as you enter the tarmac where the planes are on display.

All vehicles must carry a fire extinguisher.
No Haz Mat or weapons are allowed.
No coolers may be brought onto the show field.
Registration includes admission for the driver and one passenger. Additional passengers must pay the gate fee of $10.
The first 500 registrants will receive goodie bags.
Judging will be by people’s choice with prizes awarded on Sunday.
Gates will open at 8:00 a.m. Show times are from 9 to 5. Vehicles are expected to be on the show field by 10 a.m.
No skates, bikes, roller blades, skate boards or scooters are allowed on the show field.

If you think this is a PITA, take a look at the new (post-marathon-bombing) rules for what you can't bring into an NFL football stadium. This is pretty tame compared to that. Welcome to the century of terrorism. I am not deterred - there are plenty of vendors promised to be on site. I guess if you don't want to pay the vendors then it's an issue.

I actually have looked at the NFL new rules and have no issue with them. And that was in the planning WELL before the Marathon Bombings. Personally I don't see a need to bring a huge bag of crap to watch a football game. You haven't been able to bring food in for years and your there to watch the game, why do you need computers/tablets and such at the game? But that's my opinion.
At car show's you do a lot of walking around and most of the time its in an open field with limited vendors so I usually have drinks/water in a cooler. This won't deter me from going, only weather will do that (not driving that far in the rain again this year).
So I'll wait to register to see what the weather says about Tues/Wed to register.

SVT10th

I agree No Coolers is a annoyance. (Remember how well that worked at the Pease Air Show a few years ago? It was ridiculously hot, no one could have coolers and the vendors were charging insane prices for water. A lot of people ended up needing medical attention.)

Like Todd, I'll register when I have a better idea if the weather gonna hold.

I'm in, just about to register. Kind of sounds like its just Jim, Bruce, Jibber and me so far. I think that if we meet on Rt 3 either at the park and ride on 113 or the Mobile station the next exit down on Westford Rd that way we can get snacks/drinks for the road (not to put in the coolers!!!), and gas up if we need that too.
7ish?

We can meet in Hudson at the old Stop & Shop parking lot (the store just closed, so plenty of room!) right near the Haffner's gas station and where the Sagamore Bridge meets Lowell Road (where Wason Rd. meets Lowell Rd. too) Very easy access to Rt. 3 from there. What say you guys?

One more thing: While I'm not one for getting up early, it does say that all cars must be on the show field by 10:00AM, so we can't leave too late.

Jim, you know me, the later the better!!! I just thought before we said 7, I agree 7:30 is fine. It only takes two hours to get down there so we should be fine.
And the Hudson Brigde is called the Sagamore? Huh? Never knew that, just called it the Hudson Bridge or sometimes I called it the Bypass (but not too many people call it that. Learn something new every day!!

My car is now running smooth and cool for a change, but I'd rather not get bagged on the way to the show. I say we figure 2 hours for the trip. 7:00 is OK with me. But let's decide so we all plan with the same time.

What a great show!! Great cars, great planes and some cute girls....... what more could you ask for?
On the way home Jim and I decided to "lets see where this goes" and had a nice cruise through MA. We wound up on Rt 9 and went through Belchertown, yup that's the real name of the town!!!!! Rt 9 west of Worchester is a really cool road to cruise down. On the way out Jim and I saw a General Motors "Parade of Progress" Peter Pan mobile. This thing was things that we all read about and think that they are all destroyed. It was an amazing thing to look at.
This is definitely a show to put on the list of shows to do in the future.

Yes, I really enjoyed this show, the planes at least as much as the cars. Here's a few photos from today with a P-51 Mustang and a B-25 Mitchell. It was great to enjoy this show today with Kevin, Todd, Jim C., Jay and my sailing friend Dennis. Best day I've had this season!

Here's the GM Futurliner we saw on the way out. GM made 12 of these for the "Parade of Progress" that drove around the country in the 1940&41 and 1950-53. These trucks opened up to display all sorts of future tech, like microwaves ovens, stereo sound, television.
There are only 6 or 8 of these trucks left -- the owner of this one has another that is currently undergoing restoration.

Just to add to Jim's GM bus, I was researching it a little more and one sold for $4million in 2006 at B.J Auction. This was truely a once in a life time experience. I also saw that the top speed is 40mph with a 4 cyl diesel. I kind of hope that they changed that out. It looked that there is one located in Maine, so I would only assume that this was that one.
