Hey guys, looking at my options after my equipment failure at the track the other day!.. luckily I was able to drive it home after racing it .. Parked the car and kind of apprehensive to even drive it until I have it taken care of.. Lost the posi.. rear end clutch packs are toast ..
Been looking at some of the many options and doing some reading.. Here a lot of people suggest with any kind of track time and with just about 400 rw torque I should consider upgrading to a 31 spline axle set up along with the Ford Racing Traction Loc Diff w/ carbon discs for 31 spline, I guess it what they use in Cobra's.
I really dont want to break the bank but I dont want to have to pay for another repair on the rear end anytime soon..Rick and I discussed it briefly the other day and i can even go with the Ford racing rear clutch pack kit and may not have another issue , just cant be sure though..
Thoughts, Deals, opinions all welcome !!

Barry, I know you don't want to break the bank. I had the same issue when I did my upgrade. I know it's not as popular as some other options, perhaps because of price, but I urge you to investigate the Torsen T2R before making a decision. They are so sure of it that they weld it together. Unless you have an all-out drag car, you won't find a better choice IMHO. I know Maximum Motorsports sells them, and I have heard that Ford Racing also sells them now and have included them in a few of the hotter Mustangs sold in recent years.
I've been running mine for 6-7 years now and love it. And when I "leave a patch", both tracks are always identical and fade out at exactly the same place. There are cheaper options, but take a look at the Torsen before deciding. And there are no clutches to burn out! And I haven't experienced any wheel hop at all since the upgrade.

I have an Detroit TruTrac with Moser 31 splines, FRPP 4.30's, and FRPP diff cover/girdle.
Tom (ProCharged Azure 03 Mach 1 recommended the set up)
It is a gear driven differential versus having to rebuild clutch packs again

barry, if you go with the cobra/terminator diff you know it will be able to handle the power and be streetable.
There are guys out there pushing 600 + hp on these diff's and not having any problems.
given your racing behavoir ( which is not that often ) I think it is definitly the most affordable and realistic option since you do a TON of street driving as well.
I would recomend the upgraded 31 splines, definitly a must have if you plan to do any type of drag racing.

Thanks Guys,, Been eyeballing this Cobra Rear diff. This the cheapest I have seen for a brand new one and and it appears to be from a legit seller on Ebay !

Now I need to search out a great deal on some 31 spline Axles and accessories , I imagine I have to buy new bearing and all that

Just make sure the axles have the provisions for the ABS rings. I bought a set of Superior 31 splines that did not and ended up having to get Moser 31 splines.
ABS rings are readily available at any Ford dealer

You can also remove the ABS rings from your current axles and press them onto the new ones - I did. Moser or Strange 31 spline axles are great, but given your usage I'd say you can save some bucks by getting Alloy axles. (Alloy is the brand name not the description.) That's what I run and they seem like decent quality for the money.

I use this site alot and the Ford Racing T-LOK Is rock solid. I just put one in for my V6. its a bit smaller, however it still gets the job done. Plus AmericanMuscle gives you many options to choose from.

That's actually the rear diff I am getting,, actually got even a better deal that initially was expected.!! Brand new PN# Ford Racing M-4204-F318C in the sealed Ford Racing Box . $ 199 shipped and it's already processed and have the tracking #... talk about Hooking up !!! PUN INTENDED !!!!
Now I am just trying to get my best deal on a set of Forged 31 spline Moser Axles.. have a few good leads!! I am all about searching out the best possible price and then still trying to get a better deal.. I am all about that..
I do have a question on the fluids though.. I keep seeing Royal Purple doesn't need the Ford Racing Friction Modifier but then I see places like American Muscle selling the fluid kit with the bottle of modifier with it, also I see the Factory spec for the fluids is 3.75 pints which is just under 2 quarts but I see sites saying I need 3 quarts of the fluids? I plan to use the 75w90 Gear Oil Is this just a way to sell more fluids than actually needed or am I missing something?

So given the circumstance, budget and the fact I am only at the track 2 or 3 times a year making about 400 to the rear wheels I had to come up with a workable plan that fit my budget, Which I think I accomplished.. I scoured and scoured and I came up with a complete package of all brand new in the box equipment ..
Ford Racing M-4204-F318C Traction - LOK Limited Slip Differential w/ Carbon Discs - 31 Spline 8.8in - OE in 2003-04 Cobra's
Ford Racing M-1225-B - Ford Racing Rear Axle Assembly Kit, Bearings & Seals
Ford Racing M-4050-B - Ford Racing Rear Axle Assembly Kit, Bearings & Seals w/ 4 oz bottle friction modifier
Moser Engineering -A883153-8.8" Ford 31 splines w/ABS adapter
Moser Engineering - 8368 - Wheel Studs
Royal Purple 01301 - Royal Purple Synthetic Oils and Lubricants
All shipped to my door for under $545.00 http://www.smokinstangs.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif The only bummer is it will be a couple weeks before I can get it up to have Rick do the work !!
In the meantime I dont think I will drive the car at all, dont want to take any chances on breaking anything else before I get the rear end straightened out... and the beat goes on !

Well the parts have arrived for the repair/ upgrade... Now I am just waiting on my turn to get into the Prez's Garage !!
Looking forward to rolling down the road again with the Saleen soon , haven't driven it since I parked it after ED DAY !!! just dont feel like taking a chance something else could go wrong before I get things taken care of.. Also picked up a Saleen Bumper over the weekend on Craigslist.. had to take a ride through the back roads of Pepperell to get it but in the end I think it was worth it !!!
